Day 15 - Movin' On

We were sad to be leaving Custer. We had such a terrific time here and there was so much to do. And there is still so much left to do that we just didn't have time for. Regardless, it was time to move on. Bob had some, ahem, difficulties hooking up his trailer to the new hitch on the new truck. It seems that the hitch might not be quite right. But, the boys figured out how to make it work for now and we were on our way.

The sadness quickly faded away and turned to excitement as we entered...

The ride out was spectacular - a lot to look at, so it made the long ride go by quickly. We drove by some beautiful ranches. Don was ready to stop and make an offer on the spot. I'm not quite on board yet, but we'll see. We did at least pass through some actual towns with schools, restaurants, and stores. I think that if I were to live out here, I would need to be within a reasonable driving distance to actual civilization. As much as I love open space and privacy, I need to know that I can get somewhere if I want to.

Wyoming wins the award for best rest areas ever. There aren't any gas stations or restaurants, but clean restrooms, covered picnic tables, and new playgrounds with rubberized mats underneath. The rest areas are nicer than most public parks and put all other states to shame.

We also drove through a large Indian reservation. It was a pretty desolate area, and the places along the highway were very run-down or abandoned. It was in stark contrast to some of the huge spreads that we were admiring.

Our group ended up stopping in Casper, WY to fuel up and to grab some McDonald's for lunch. We had sandwiches made, but decided to save them for dinner time since we might not be near much of anything around then.

As we got closer to the Grand Tetons, the landscape began to change yet again. Breathtaking!

The weather had been changeable all day, with huge black clouds moving in and out, but we didn't hit any real rain.

You can see the rain falling on the hills in the background
Photo though Bob & Linda's windshield - pardon the raindrops and bug splats, but the red rocks were gorgeous!

Then, we came to the entrance road to go into Grand Tetons National Park. It was under major construction, with no pavement remaining. There were signs everywhere about the extreme grade and stating that the road was "Slippery When Wet." So, naturally it starting pouring.

As you may have guessed, we did arrive safely.  We're staying at the Colter Bay Village RV Park within the national park. It's awesome to be in among the trees again, but we're packed in like sardines! It's kind of funny that we are in a national park and it's much more crowded and noisy then anyplace else we've stayed. It's a great location, though - nice to already be in the park and not have to drive far in the morning.
